Your Moving Checklist: What to Do the Week Before

The week before a move is when good planning pays off. Work through this checklist and moving day becomes the easy part — nothing left to figure out under pressure while a truck is waiting outside.

7 days before

• Confirm your moving date, time, and both addresses with your movers
• Start packing rooms you use least — store, guest room, books
• Use up perishable food so there's less to move
• Sort items to donate or sell and arrange pickup
• Tell your movers about any access issues at either address — stairs, no lift, tight parking

2–3 days before

• Pack everything except daily essentials
• Label boxes clearly by room and mark fragile items
• Defrost the fridge and freezer
• Charge your phone and a power bank for the day
• Set aside cash if you'd like to tip the crew — entirely optional, but appreciated for a physically demanding day

The night before

• Pack an essentials bag: documents, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes
• Keep valuables and important papers with you
• Confirm pickup time with your crew
• If you have kids or pets, arrange for someone to look after them during the loading and unloading — it's the safest option and the quickest way to keep the move moving
• Get a good night's sleep — you've earned it

On the day itself

Be ready before the crew arrives rather than packing while they wait — it's the single biggest time-saver on moving day. Walk the crew through what's going where, point out anything fragile or oddly shaped, and do a final check of cupboards and drawers before the truck leaves so nothing gets left behind.

The first night in your new place

Set up the bed and bathroom essentials first, even if the rest stays boxed for a day or two — a working shower and a made bed make the whole move feel finished, even when it isn't quite. Everything else can wait until you've had a proper night's sleep.
